troops: soldiers and armed forces

ally: someone who is on your side

know-how: knowledge, expertise, understanding, competence, aptitude

hard-cash: negotiable coins and banknotes as opposed to other forms of payment

supplying: giving, contributing, providing, donating

manpower: the number of people who are able to work

cannon fodder: soldiers regarded as not being important (eg. trenchmen); fodder: livestock food
